I am a fine artist living and working in the Tyne & Wear area. As a figurative/ portrait artist I focus on the human form as my subject matter. My work comes from a love of people and a deep interest in the human condition. I use all my skills as a figurative artist; composition, line, space, colour, body language, facial expression and realism to produce paintings that are refreshingly direct and unsentimental. In the painting only the composition is simplified, stripped of unwanted clutter, creating a type of stylisation, however nothing is stripped from the main subject of the painting. I instinctively relate to images of women in art and also feel most able to express myself artistically by creating images of the female form. Having drawn faces and figures since childhood, but with no real formal training, I returned to Education in 2006. I specialise in commissioned portraiture and figurative works. Alongside this, my studio artwork is based on a personal response to the stigma of depression and mental health issues in women.
