my work is broadly about identity, belonging and perception. The work attempts to play with our perceptions so that there may be an object that we can clearly perceive but it may be abstracted or reproduced so that it is different to the widely agreed meanings we usually place upon it. It is remade into something new so that the applied meaning of the original object becomes compromised or entirely redundant. The thing itself is allowed to transcend it's function and our sense of perception is set free from the physical world.Traces or parts of the original thing may remain but because it has been remade into something essentially meaningless our brains can have a rest and we can enjoy just looking. The iced lolly paintings are ostensibly about nostalgia and childhood, however the work strives to say as little as possible as each person looking at the paintings, though guided by what they are seeing, will bring their own baggage whether it be memories, opinions or thoughts, they will be particular to that person. My work is to direct the audience to examine their own thoughts rather than impose my own beliefs. This is pointless because no -one can see anything completely independently without the context of their own mind. I try then to embrace this essential truth and work with it rather than against it. Some of the work deals with the dichotomy of how we externalise our desire for acceptance and belonging to a group though we try to assert our own individuality at the same time. The work does not seek to be abstract nor does it try to recreate the real world. The objects have been stripped back to their essential components so they may act as signs or symbols so they can act as a vessel for our own perception. my e - mail is This email address is being protected from spambots.
