Newcastle Artists Society was established April 2009. The society was borne of the desire to create a cohesive link between artists in the North East of England and the general public. Newcastle Artists Society hopes to bring together all artists and all art forms in a group that is easy to reach and easy to interact with.
It can be difficult for artists to know where to begin when it comes to getting on in the art world and even more so, it can be difficult for the general public to know where to go to find an artist of quality (this is not intended as a statement of elitism, different people look for different qualities when it comes to sating their artistic desires.)
I spent some time living in Charlotte NC America and one of the things I observed there was that when an artist who was new to the area met with another artist, the first thing they would be asked was, "well have you joined any of the Artist Societies?" Something that simple can open many doors for people who are daunted by what can be a very confusing profession to be involved in.
I was involved with a couple of the Art Societies in North Carolina and although it can be true that a society is only as good as it's members, it is more often the case that a society is only as good as the ethos on which it is founded. It is my belief that most of the artists I have known in the North East have a strong sense of community and an understanding of the fact that we have an incredible talent base. I hope this Society becomes as useful a tool to members and the general public as the region deserves.
